Arctic Shaman Moved to the Amazon to Bring Home Lost Indigenous Wisdom

When “Jungle Svonni” couldn’t find anyone left to train him in shamanism in his own country, he sought to further his education in one of the few places on Earth where this knowledge is still preserved: The Amazon

The quest for ancient wisdom drove a man from the arctic circle to move to the Amazon

“Jungle Svonni” is Sámi from Sápmi, which is situated north of the Arctic Circle, where he works mainly as a Shaman. He was living alone in the mountains for some years as a way to learn to have a spiritual connection to nature; hunting and fishing to feed himself. However he reached a point where he felt that to get any further, he needed to find a human being that had this knowledge; someone that can give him more guidance in his own country — but there wasn’t anybody left in the region who the possessed this knowledge. One of the few remaining places on Earth where this wisdom is still preserved is the Amazon. So that’s where he went.

Sápmi is the cultural region traditionally inhabited by the indigenous Sámi people, and is located in Northern Europe and includes the northern parts of Fennoscandia. The region stretches over four countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. On the north it is bounded by the Barents Sea, on the west by the Norwegian Sea and on the east by the White Sea.

Everything works the same wherever you are on the planet… the same natural laws apply

“Everything works the same wherever you are on the planet,” says Jungle Svonni.  “The same natural laws apply…  the situation in the world, if we look at environmental issues… and more social issues, resources on earth are not going to last much longer. In some parts of the world it’s become very noticeable that this has already gone too far.”

Svonni, of Northern Lights Shamanic Centre, believes the only way this is going to change is if we collectively raise our vibration, and that we start to evolve spiritually and become what we are meant to be. He says that what we are today is more of a prototype of humans than real humans, because real humans are fantastic creatures that can live in harmony with each other and with their natural surroundings. Our true origin for all of us is nature, and if we grew up without a relationship to nature, he believes it is something very important missing from us. It’s a base that’s not there.

“The time when a shaman was somebody living in the middle of the Amazon or on top of a mountain is over, because the shaman is basically a servant to his or her people. And you can’t be that if you hide on top of a mountain or in the middle of a huge forest. You need to be a public person to spread the wisdom and be of assistance whenever there is a need for it.”

Jungle Svonni thinks there are so many things making him hopeful. “Like 30 years ago, not many people cared about environmentally friendly products. Today, everybody can afford to does it. And the interest for shamanism, yoga and meditation, and all kinds of spiritual practices are really spreading.”

You can find out more about Jungle Svonni, Sápmi and the indigenous Sámi people on their website, Beneath Northern Lights: Stories from Arctic Natives or the Beneath Northern Lights Facebook page, because Svonni believes the Internet is doing a good job of connecting people and spreading ideas and knowledge. How do you connect with nature?

“Since I am a Sami and grew up here in the north and on Greenland with the Inuits, and  have spend alot of time on the mountains living of hunting and fishing, my connection to the spirit world mainly goes through the Arctic nature and my anscestors who spend their lives following the reindeer. Not through any amazonian tradition. In the Amazon I just found the keys to this ancient knowledge.”

“Shamanism is evolution and growth. It is the methods and techniques to heal. Shamanism is in essence the same all over the world, on every continent and in every culture. Since we all live in the same universe, on the same planet we all live by the same natural laws.”
